Have dogs and cats evolved to eat grains & processed food after years of domestication?

Here’s a popular question!

Question:

After years of domestication, have dogs and cats’ anatomical systems adapted to take in the food that we’ve been giving them? Haven’t we co-existed for a long, long time? Some have said that cats and dogs (especially dogs!) have evolved to eat grains and ‘human food’ over the years, which makes it perfectly acceptable to feed them the grains and carbohydrates that are found in processed food.

Grrrrowwwl?

Answer:

Raw food is what dogs and cats evolved to eat when they were wild. And don’t let anyone tell you that dogs and cats are domesticated now and therefore are now adapted to processed food. Canned and kibbled pet foods have been around for less than 100 years, and that is not nearly enough time for animals to evolve to adapt to a new food source. A chihuahua may not look much like a wolf on the outside, but on the inside physiologically they are still very much wolves.

I hope this helps. Good luck with your mission and thank you for what you are doing for Singapore pets.
